“Every man has a goal in life. Whether they know it or not, it's almost as if every human being was made with a goal in mind. Some want to be presidents, athletes for life, doctors, astronauts, dictators, and even want to rule the world. Every man is different, so whats different from you and me?
Well ya see, I don't have a goal. No sir'ee. I have no goal in mind at all, that's why you took up this job didn't you? Not just for the money, but because you had no where to go after all right? Most people end up in places like these, well not this exactly but almost in the same situation. Some where along this world, we just give up. We lose sight at what we wanted from the beginning, and we can't get there anymore. Some get through it, the fog that we cloud ourselves in. That fog is what kills most men, the poisonous cloud that we all face. It suffocates us, it blinds us, it makes it hard to breathe and at some point, not even think about the future. Hell, I wasn't even able to think about the next minute because I was so damn caught up in not trying to die, I lost what was worth dying for.
Do you get that way? Have you boy? You know you're awfully quiet, it is your first day after all. Well then, how about we take a little wonder in the citizens down here. Now look here, you got your average business man in his cubicle, a barista tending to her customers, and a child. What is different from all of them? Other than how they live, what they do, and the stages of life they are in. Do you know the answer?
Nothing is the answer. Nothing is different. The cubicle, where a man is worked like a slave. In front of a computer, pressing buttons on a keyboard, this was you not too long ago wasn't it? At a desk, sitting there in front of such a marvelous machine, but where is the human connection? Jobs now a days have no such thing. You sit there, typing, reading, working. Hours and hours on end, sometimes you get up to stretch, to walk, to eat, but did you even say hi to your fellow workers? How about have any friends at work? I'm guessing not since you came here. But him, him right there in the cubicle, he's living the same life that you had. Only he's older, much older now. I wonder how many years of solitude, of pain, or torture he went through. Is he even enjoying his life? Can you imagine someone enjoying that type of life
What about the barista you're wondering? She's almost in the same boat as the business man. Except she's still different. She creates connections, no matter how small, and she is judged upon it. If she messes up once, it's noticed right away. If she creates the best cup for someone, she never gets a compliment. Or even if she does, it rarely happens as in this world, everything is so fast paced no one has time to slow down any more. No one has the time to walk, and enjoy where they are. Highways were built for this purpose, and so were services like this coffee shop were made with the same intent. Customers come in, they order, they leave. Simple as that, no one wants to talk. The connection that we once created is getting harder and harder in this world.
Now for the child, whats different about the child? Every single fiber in that kid's body is different. He has a chance, a chance to to be himself. Take a look, take a look back into school. How many teachers were creative? How many supported the arts and actually encouraged a different approach at certain subjects or topics? Not many, do you know why? It's because we were all taught in a system that creates robots. You were trained to be the best worker, the most diligent and smartest worker. If he follows that path, he'll graduate high school, do the same in college, and have nothing to look forward to in his future but a constant cycle of repeats. He can survive, he can be creative, he can find his passion. And those that do, never end up here.
Come on, it's time for work. Stop slugging, and help me out. That's it, right there. Now load, a little bit to your left. Breathe. Shoot.”
